Ingesting Essential Oils

In our Ingesting Essential Oils For Your Health blog post we gave you the skinny on essential oils and told you the basics about adding them to your drink for health benefits. Now, here’s a more in-depth look at the practice of essential oil ingestion and the details on how you can use them to best fit your health situation and your life.

Which essential oils are safe to use internally?

Before choosing an oil to mix with your drink, check to make sure it’s on the FDA’s certified GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) list. You can find the list here.

If your intention is to use your essential oils internally, avoid purchasing them at a bath and body store, as these are made for perfumes. They are usually adulterated with chemicals to extend the life of the scent of each oil.

How do I find quality essential oils?

The quality and purity of the essential oils you’re ingesting are perhaps the most important part of this equation. Consuming only pure essential oils means you’re getting the true health benefits and not ingesting any harmful added chemicals. When purchasing your essential oils, you should find a company or supplier that you trust. Ensure that the oils are all natural by reading the labels, and make sure the oil originates from the species listed on the label.

What are the health benefits of ingesting essential oils?

Mixing a few drops of peppermint oil into your plain water can soothe indigestion and nausea. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, peppermint can also be used to alleviate cold symptoms.

Lemon oil is high in vitamins and is therefore also helpful in treating colds and strengthening your immune system. It assists the body in fighting diseases. As with peppermint oil, simply put a few drops of it into your water. Lemon oil is also popular as a weight loss aid because it helps to “cleanse” the body internally and improve circulation.

Grapefruit essential oil helps to keep the kidneys in top condition by removing calcium and uric deposits. Another little-known use for grapefruit oil is appetite stimulation.

When is the best time to ingest essential oils?

Use a lemon essential oil or peppermint oil mix at the first sign of symptoms. Lemon can also be ingested first thing in the morning to promote cleansing of the body.

Always remember to mix just one to two drops of the oil into your water and check that it’s listed on the FDA’s GRAS list, which is continuously updated. After just a few uses of essential oils, you’ll be able to feel a difference in your daily health and develop a routine that works for you.
